Laue’s Discovery of X-ray Di$raction by Crystals

چکیده
The University of Munich prided itself upon having the chairs occupied by eminent professors, well known beyond the confines of the city and of Germany. In 1912 some of the celebrities were H. Wiilfflin for History of Art, L. Brentano for Economics, Amira for History, 0. Hertwig for Zoology, P. Groth for Mineralogy and Crystallography, W. C. Rijntgen for Experimental Physics and A. Sommerfeld for Theoretical Physics. The last three are of particular interest for our subject and may therefore be characterized in some detail. Each was head of an Institute with Assistants, Lecturers (Privatdozenten) or Assistant Professors (a.o. [= ausserordentlicher] Professor) and other staff attached to it.

Disputed discovery: the beginnings of X-ray diffraction in crystals in 1912 and its repercussionsThis Laue centennial article has also been published in Zeitschrift fur Kristallographie [Eckert (2012). Z. Kristallogr. 227, 27-35]
The discovery of X-ray diffraction is reviewed from the perspective of the contemporary knowledge in 1912 about the nature of X-rays. Laue’s inspiration that led to the experiments by Friedrich and Knipping in Sommerfeld’s institute was based on erroneous expectations. The ensuing discoveries of the Braggs clarified the phenomenon (although they, too, emerged from dubious assumptions about the ...
متن کاملCharacterization and nonlinear optical properties of a poly(acrylic acid)±surfactant±multi-walled carbon nanotube complex
A poly(acrylic acid)±surfactant±multi-walled carbon nanotube complex was prepared and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diraction and small-angle X-ray diraction. The complex was found to retain a lamellar structure, and helped micrometer-length multi-walled carbon nanotube dissolve in organic solvents. Its nonlinear optical p...
متن کاملAn Overview of Technological Developments in Medical Applications of X-Rays and Radioactivity
The years 1895 to 1898 were momentous for their impact on health and human well beings. First, Wilhelm Roentgen noted a glowing fluorescent screen, caused by invisible rays. This event subsequently led to the discovery of X-rays in 1895, and thus the birth of the “atomic ageâ€. Next Becquerel’s investigations of these mysterious rays led to his experiments with uranium salt crystals. He th...
متن کاملFIFI LS: the optical design and di raction analysis
We present the optical system of the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI LS) for the SOFIA airborne observatory. The instrument is designed to allow di raction limited integral eld spectroscopy in the far infrared wavelength range 42 to 210 microns. Two parallel wavelength channels (42 110 microns and 110 210 microns) employ Littrow mounted di raction gratings with anamorphic col...
متن کاملElements of XAFS
Introduction Over the last two decades X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) spectroscopy has emerged as an incisive probe of the local structure around selected atomic species in solids, liquids, and molecular gases. Foremost among its strengths are its applicability to amorphous materials and its \tunability" { the ability to probe the environments of di erent elements in the sample by selec...
